How does XtraMath support students who are deaf or hard of hearing?

XtraMath’s instructional videos feature Mr. C, our program’s math coach, and now include optional captions that provide real-time text transcriptions of the audio content. This feature helps students who are deaf or hard of hearing follow along and fully engage with the lessons.

Teachers and students can adjust these settings anytime to meet individual learning needs. Captions can be enabled from the student’s dashboard by clicking the student’s name in the top right corner of the screen. A menu will appear, allowing users to toggle captions on or off for a more customized learning experience.

When captions are enabled:

  • Enhances comprehension by providing real-time text alongside spoken content.
  • Supports diverse learning styles, benefiting students who are deaf, hard of hearing, or prefer to read along.
  • Creates a more inclusive classroom, ensuring every student can fully participate in learning.

For students who use sign language, we also offer an American Sign Language (ASL) version of XtraMath. In this version, a teacher signs instructions and encouragement in the program’s videos. However, some features—such as trophies, longer threshold options, and video captioning—are not yet available in the ASL version, as it is built on an older version of XtraMath.
