Can I turn off the timer during student activities?

No, the timer cannot be turned off because XtraMath uses a timed, spaced repetition system to build math fact fluency. This system reinforces both accuracy and speed by strategically presenting math facts at increasing intervals to promote students’ long-term retention.

However, teachers and parents have different options to reduce time pressure for students.

These option are ideal for:

✔ Young learners (grades K-2)

✔ Students with anxiety

✔ Students needing extra support

Option 1: Hide the Timer (Reduce Visual Pressure)

Hiding the timer removes it from the student’s screen while still tracking response time in the background. This can help reduce anxiety and allow students to focus on recalling math facts.

How to Hide the Timer:

Teachers or Parents can Hide the Timer from their Students’ Screens:

  1. From you Teacher or Parent Dashboard choose a specific student’s name
  2. Click Student Settings or Child Settings.
  3. Check the Hide Timer checkbox.

Students can Hide the Timer on Themselves:

  1. Have them click on the timer icon at the top left of the screen during their practice session.

Option 2: Adjust the Response Time (Provide More Time to Answer)

Teachers or Parents Can Adjust the Response Time for StudentsIf a student is feeling anxious or struggling to answer within the default time, teachers or parents can switch them to a program with a longer response time. XtraMath offers options of up to 12 seconds per problem, providing extra time for students who need a more relaxed pace to build confidence and fluency.

How to Adjust the Response Time:

  1. Go to the Teacher or Parent Dashboard.
  2. Select “Change Programs” and ****then click on a student’s name.
  3. Choose a “Custom Program” that offers a longer response time or threshold.

⚠️ Important: Changing Programs Resets Progress

If you adjust the response time by switching to a new program, the student’s previous progress will be reset since they are beginning a different program.

If a student needs more time but doesn’t want to lose progress, consider hiding the timer instead of switching programs.
