What timer options are available, and how do they benefit students?

XtraMath is committed to inclusive and differentiated instruction, ensuring all students have the time and support they need to build confidence and fluency at their own pace.

By default, students have 6 seconds to answer each math fact question. This timer is chosen to give students enough time to recall facts from memory without calculating. It balances fluency and confidence, ensuring students can show mastery without feeling rushed or anxious.

However, XtraMath offers multiple threshold options to meet diverse learning needs:

• 3-Second Timer Threshold*– A more challenging option that promotes automatic recall, a key indicator of fluency. Research shows that answering correctly within this time frame demonstrates proficiency.
• 2-Second & 1.5-Second Timer Thresholds* – Ideal for advanced students, including gifted elementary learners and middle or high schoolers using XtraMath for intervention. These options push fluency to the next level.
• 12-Second Timer Threshold – Designed for early learners (K-2), students with disabilities, and those with special education needs, this option gives extra time to develop conceptual understanding. As these students are still building typing skills and fine motor control, the extended time reduces pressure and lets them focus on recall with confidence.

*Customizing the response time to 1.5, 2, or 3 seconds is available exclusively with an XtraMath License. This feature lets educators adjust fluency goals to better meet students’ individual needs.
