What are the timer options, and how do they benefit students?

XtraMath is committed to inclusive and differentiated instruction, ensuring all students have the time and support they need to build confidence and fluency at their own pace.

By default, students have 6 seconds to answer each math fact question. This threshold is carefully chosen because it provides enough time for students to recall facts from memory without resorting to calculation. It strikes the ideal balance between fluency and confidence-building, ensuring students can demonstrate mastery without feeling rushed or anxious.

However, XtraMath offers multiple threshold options to meet diverse learning needs:

  • 3-Second Threshold*– A more challenging option that promotes automatic recall, a key indicator of fluency. Research shows that answering correctly within this time frame demonstrates proficiency.
  • 2-Second & 1.5-Second Thresholds* – Ideal for advanced students, including gifted elementary learners and middle or high schoolers using XtraMath for intervention. These options push fluency to the next level.
  • 12-Second Threshold – Designed for early learners (K-2), students with disabilities, and those with special education needs, this option provides extra time to develop conceptual understanding. Since these students are still building typing skills and fine motor control, the extended time reduces pressure and allows them to focus on recall with confidence.
*Customizing the response time to 1.5, 2, or 3 seconds is available exclusively with XtraMath Premium. This feature allows educators to tailor fluency goals to better meet students’ needs.
