What’s the purpose of XtraMath?

XtraMath is a nonprofit, online math fact fluency program that helps students develop quick recall and automaticity of their basic math facts — addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. Building this kind of fluency frees up working memory, so students can focus on problem-solving instead of getting stuck on basic calculations.

Students with a strong foundation in basic math facts have an easier time tackling more advanced math later on, like fractions, algebra, and multi-step word problems. Automaticity with facts also supports confidence and reduces math anxiety, which can shape how a student feels about math for years to come.

XtraMath uses short, daily practice sessions — about 10 minutes — combined with an adaptive, mastery-based approach: students only move on to harder facts once they've truly mastered the easier ones. A Placement Quiz option also lets educators quickly assess where a student stands, without requiring daily practice.

Standards-aligned and designed for K-6 elementary school students, XtraMath is also effective for older students who need review, intervention, or extra support building fluency. As a nonprofit, XtraMath offers a free version for every student, with additional features, customization, and reporting available through an XtraMath License for schools and educators.
