It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of David Jeschke, the founder of XtraMath, in December 2024.
David was more than a talented software developer and math enthusiast—he was a pioneer in his approach to helping children develop foundational math skills. His belief in technology’s potential for public good and commitment to educational equity leaves a lasting legacy. We celebrate David’s example and his impact on tens of millions of students, teachers, and families across the United States and around the world.
In 2007, while volunteering as a math tutor in a Seattle elementary school, David noticed many students still relying on their fingers for basic arithmetic. This sparked the idea for a program that would help students build fluency and math confidence. Drawing on his expertise as a former Microsoft programmer, David developed the original XtraMath program by himself.
What began as a modest experiment soon grew into a global movement driven by teachers. In 2009, David formally established XtraMath as a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing a free, and accessible math fluency program. Thanks to his vision and the support of educators, XtraMath now reaches millions of students annually and is one of the most widely used math programs ever.
David’s belief was simple yet profound: every child deserves the chance to succeed in math. By mastering basic math facts, students could unlock their potential to tackle more complex concepts with confidence. This belief continues to guide our work at XtraMath.
David’s impact extends far beyond the online program he created. Countless students have transitioned from counting on their fingers to mastering math facts, paving the way for academic success and building math confidence. Teachers have also benefited from a tool that simplifies instruction, tracks progress, and fosters engagement. Over 95% of teachers surveyed say that XtraMath helps their students reach grade standards.
After setting up XtraMath team, and recurring revenue from mobile app sales, he was able to retire as ED and keep a watchful eye as the President of the Board of Directors. When the organization faced trouble during Covid, David returned as the unpaid leader to bring on a new experienced team, recruit a full Board of Directors, and helped to stabilize the company. His efforts were successful and David was able to retire for active participation in 2024 as the Board recognized him with the title, Founder Emeritus.
XtraMath has evolved significantly since its founding, but its core purpose remains the same: empowering students to get the extra math practice necessary to achieve fluency and gain confidence. Guided by David’s principles, we continue to innovate, introducing new features that make math learning more effective and inclusive while supporting teachers and students. These efforts reflect our dedication to advancing David’s vision for accessible, and equitable math education.
As we reflect on David’s remarkable contributions, we are inspired by his belief in the power of education to change lives. His legacy motivates us to improve and expand XtraMath’s reach, ensuring every child has the opportunity to thrive in math.
Thank you, David, for your vision, dedication, and the countless lives you’ve touched. Your passion for math education and innovative spirit will forever inspire us. We are honored to carry forward the incredible legacy you built and will continue striving to ensure XtraMath supports math learning for generations to come. Rest in peace, you will always be remembered as the heart and soul of XtraMath.
