XtraMath Improves Accessibility for All Students!

By Julieta Zalazar & Jackie P. Orcutt

At XtraMath, we believe every student deserves an inclusive and accessible learning experience. That’s why we’re excited to announce that our Student App now fully meets the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 (based on VPAT Version 2.4). This means our platform is now internationally recognized for providing an accessible learning environment for all students, including those with visual, auditory, motor, and cognitive impairments.

What is WCAG 2.1 Compliance?

The Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1, developed by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C), set the standard for making web content more accessible for individuals with disabilities. By meeting these guidelines, XtraMath ensures that every student—regardless of ability—can engage in effective math fluency practice in a way that suits their needs.

Accessibility Features for Everyone

We believe accessibility should be built-in, not an afterthought. That’s why all accessibility features in XtraMath are available to every user—ensuring an optimized learning environment for all students, whether they require additional support or simply prefer a more customized experience.

Optional Key Features for Enhanced Accessibility

While XtraMath is designed to be inclusive for all learners, we also offer optional features that can be enabled at any time by students or teachers for additional support:

🟣 Disable Animations

To reduce distractions, users can turn off animations. When this feature is enabled from the student’s dashboard, answers appear in a steady violet color rather than flashing. This is especially helpful for students who are sensitive to motion or visual effects.

📝 Enable Captions

Our instructional videos featuring Mr. C (XtraMath’s math coach) now include optional captions, providing real-time text transcriptions of the audio content. This feature enhances comprehension for students who are deaf or hard of hearing and benefits those who learn best by reading along.

Real Impact in the Classroom

With XtraMath’s accessibility improvements, educators can provide a more personalized learning experience, ensuring that every student—regardless of ability—has the opportunity to build math fluency with confidence. These enhancements also streamline classroom management, allowing teachers to focus more on instruction and student engagement rather than troubleshooting accessibility barriers.
